Your Step-by-Step Guide to Alcohol Detox at Home

Recover safely and privately with a personalised home detox plan, guided by medical professionals every step of the way.

Your programme begins with a confidential clinical assessment and safety screening, includes daily check-ins while you stabilise with a nominated support person at home, and provides ongoing aftercare so progress continues once the detox phase is complete.

Step 1: Getting to Know You

Your journey begins with a friendly, confidential call with one of our experienced team members. We will ask about your alcohol use, medical history, and living situation to help determine whether detox at home is the right path for you.

It is not a test, but a chance for us to learn how to support you best. If we believe an alternative would be safer, we will explain the options.

Step 2: Medical Review and Detox Plan

Next, you will have an online consultation with a qualified medical professional. This is where your personalised detox plan is created, including a safe medication regimen designed to ease withdrawal symptoms.

Once prescribed, your detox medication is delivered to your door in discreet packaging so your privacy is maintained and you are prepared to begin.

Step 3: Pre-Detox Preparation and Daily Support

Before starting, we will guide you and your support buddy through what to expect. From day one, our clinical team checks in daily, monitors symptoms, adjusts treatment when needed, and offers reassurance and advice.

You are never alone in this process, even when you are detoxing at home.

Step 4: The Role of a Support Buddy

A key part of your home detox safety plan is having someone you trust nearby. This may be a friend, partner, or family member who stays with you during the detox period.

They do not need medical training, only a calm presence and the ability to communicate with us if needed. A support buddy helps ensure your safety and provides consistent support throughout the detox process.

Step 5: Beginning the Detox Process

Once you have completed the assessments, received your medication, and your support buddy is ready, your alcohol home detox officially begins. This stage usually lasts 5 to 10 days.

We remain in close contact, help you manage symptoms, keep you on track, and provide clear guidance from the first dose through stabilisation.

Step 6: Long-Term Recovery Starts Here

Detox is just the beginning. To help you stay sober and build a new life in recovery, ongoing aftercare is included with every home detox.

This includes check-ins, guidance from our team, and access to a supportive peer group via WhatsApp so you can keep progressing long after the initial detox ends.

A medically supervised setting is recommended if you are high risk or home detox is not suitable.

When Is Home Detox Not Suitable

Home detox can be safe and effective for many, but it will not be suitable if you or your loved one:

  • Have a history of severe alcohol dependence or heavy, long-term drinking
  • Experience severe withdrawal symptoms such as seizures or delirium tremens (DTs)
  • Have serious physical health conditions, for example liver disease or heart problems
  • Have mental health conditions that require close monitoring
  • Are pregnant or have other complicating medical factors
  • Have previously had complicated or unsafe detox experiences
  • Have no support at home during the detox process

In these cases, a CQC-registered rehab facility provides a safe, medically supervised environment to manage withdrawal effectively and reduce risk.
